Trip Report: Honeymoon to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Seoul (875k pt spend)

My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon to Japan and Korea. We booked all travel accommodations using points to book a luxury vacation to Japan and Korea! Overall, we used a total of 875,000 points. I would have loved to make it a "million point vacation", but I couldn't find a way to spend our AA or MR points to add extra value :). Since this is the AwardTravel subreddit, most of this trip report will focus on the travel accommodations booked with points, but I'll still include a short description of other activities we enjoyed since I know there's a lot of other travelers looking for an opportunity to visit Japan and Korea.

The Flight - Korean Air First Class

Our travel began with a first-class flight on Korean Air leaving from IAD. Normally, KAL first-class passengers would be allowed access to the AirFrance/KLM lounge. Unfortunately, this lounge is currently closed for renovation so we were instead directed to the Virgin Atlantic lounge (although it looks like AirFrance and KLM passengers get to use the Etihad lounge). This lounge was nothing exciting. We were there for breakfast, and although they did have some hot options, the food was pretty bad. I tried a small bite of everything, but the only food there that I enjoyed was an apple. On the bright side, they did have cold beer, wine, and a small selection of hard liquor as well as a nice view of the tarmac and plenty of comfortable seating.
This was our first time travelling anything other than coach/economy, so both of us were very excited to see if first class was everything it's chocked up to be. Compared to every other flight I've had, this flight was unbelievably enjoyable. I was worried that 14 hours of flight time would be uncomfortable regardless of which class we were flying, but by the end of the flight I was disappointed we had to deplane. Korean Air uses the Boeing 777-300ER for the IAD-ICN flight, which features the new-ish Kosmo Suites 2.0. These first-class suites are huge. They have plenty of storage compartments, a USB charging port in the in-flight entertainment console, and an international-compatible AC outlet on the floor. As most reviews of Korean Air flights say, the in-flight entertainment is pretty lacking. Luckily I had the first 7 seasons of Game of Thrones downloaded to my laptop which I happily watched with the noise-cancelling Bose headphones they provide. I think what I was most surprised with was how many flight attendants they seemed to have devoted completely to first-class guests. It seemed like they had 1 flight attendant for every two passengers, but maybe some of them sneaked away to serve business/coach when I wasn't looking. Regardless, I was very impressed with how briskly I was tended to each time I pressed the call button.
The food service was great considering we were eating 40,000 ft in the sky. As soon as we left the ground, our flight attendant showed us the drink menu and took both meal orders ("dinner" as the first meal, and "lunch" as the second). Nether my wife nor I drink, but my uncultured palette thought the champagne tasted great. The meal service started with an amuse bouche of cream-cheese stuffed tomato and mushroom, followed by a serving of caviar with traditional accompaniments. For my first meal I chose Korean Air's famous Bibimbap served with soup, banchan, and a side of bulgogi. For how simple this meal looks, it was excellent - especially the bulgogi. For dessert, they served very good fresh fruit, cheese, and crackers followed by an unremarkable chocolate pound cake. After watching a few more episodes of Game of Thrones, my flight attendant asked if I would like my bed made. She grabbed a mattress topper and a nice comfy blanket, fully reclined my seat, and made my bed into what felt like a normal twin-size bed. I changed into the pajamas they provided and slept very well for a few hours. As a midnight snack I decided to try a bowl of spicy ramen, which lived up to its namsake of "spicy" by being a little too hot for my enjoyment. Luckily they also had cookies and milk on the menu, which I was very delighted to hear from the flight attendant when she said "I'm sorry, it will take about 8 minutes for me to bake them fresh for you". No worries - I have never been disappointed to wait for freshly baked cookies, and they certainly did not disappoint this time. After sleeping for a few more hours, my wife woke me up to let me know I only had a couple more hours until we landed. For lunch, they offered a nice "build your own salad" station with a blend of greens, veggies, and anchovy. It was nice to have something crisp and refreshing since I was feeling groggy after waking up. For my second meal I chose the Chilean Sea Bass with veggies. I really enjoyed it, but my wife wasn't too impressed. For dessert they served fruit and cheese again.
Upon landing, we weren't able to enjoy any of the lounges at the ICN airport since we only had 45 minutes to catch our connecting flight. After spending about 10 minutes looking for a lounge with a shower, we decided that we didn't have time and proceeded to our gate. The ~2.5 hour flight from ICN to NRT was on an Airbus A300-330. The first-class seating on this flight actually looked identical to the business class. The seats were still lie-flat, but it was about two-thirds the size. Again, I got the Bibimbap for my meal, even though it didn't come with the side of bulgogi this time. The flight was over before I knew it, and again the customer service we received was excellent.

Tokyo - Ritz Carlton

After getting our bags and going through customs and immigration, I had to figure out how to get to our first destination: The Ritz Carlton Tokyo. There's normally a "limousine bus" that leaves from the Narita airport that stops at our hotel, but because we weren't ready to depart from the airport until about 9:30pm there were no more buses for the day that stopped at The Ritz. There's also a train that goes directly to Tokyo Station, the "Narita Express (NEX)", but we also missed the last train for that. A quick Google search showed that it would cost about $300 to take a cab from the airport, we instead took a bus from the airport to a hotel about 2 miles from our hotel and took a cab from there. This was especially daunting considering my cellular data only worked for about 10 seconds every 10 minutes, it was getting late, and there was an obvious language barrier that made me wonder if we were headed in the right direction. But luckily, we made it to our hotel without too much effort. As expected, the customer service at The Ritz was great. Our bags were immediately taken for us when we stepped out of the cab and we were escorted to the main lobby on the 45th floor. When we stepped out of the elevator we were met by the live music of smooth jazz saxophone and a vocalist that made me think "god damn this is a swanky hotel". It got even better when we got to our room and were met with this view. They must clean the windows every day, because when you walk into the room you can't even tell there's a pane of glass there. It almost looks like an optical illusion. Having this great view was one of the highlights of the trip, and one of the biggest reasons to choose the Ritz Carlton when staying in Tokyo.
Again, I cannot believe how excellent the service was at this hotel. The concierge was great (for the most part - more on that later), turn-down service twice daily, spotlessly clean room and bathroom, etc. What really made them surpass my expectations were the little things. On Day 1 we used up all the complementary espresso pods, so during turn-down service the housekeeper left an extra box of espresso with a note (picture taken after we used some). Similarly, after a day when we used both complimentary bottles of water, after turn-down service we found two extra bottles of water with another endearing note. And one day when we mentioned to the concierge that we were celebrating my birthday and our honeymoon, we found this nice gift of chocolates in our room when we returned for the night (the heart and sphere were filled with chocolate covered almonds). Somehow I forgot to take pictures of our room. It was standard size as far as hotel rooms go, but the bathroom was exceptionally large. There was a bathtub, shower, two sinks, and a separate small room with the toilet. Speaking of the toilet, it seems like many toilets in Japan have built-in bidet systems with warm water and heated seats. This one was especially nice and had a "power deodorizer" that seemed to vacuum up the fumes directly from the bowl. Wouldn't be a deal-breaker if they didn't have it, but we enjoyed having a high-tech toilet for the first time in our lives :).
Like I said, the concierges were great with most of their recommendations. All of them were fluent in English and we enjoyed every activity/restaurant that was recommended, with one exception. For my birthday dinner we wanted to try some Japanese fine dining. We told the concierge our price limit of ~250/pp, and were recommended to try a traditional Japanese kaiseki at the Ritz Carlton's restaurant Hinokizaka. As expected, the view from our seats was excellent, and we were very happy to have some origami to take home with us as souvenirs. Unfortunately, those were the only things that we were impressed with. We've had the pleasure of dining at a handful of fine-dining restaurants and have never regretted splurging a few hundred dollars on a meal - until now. We were presented with two menu choices - one for $180 and the other $240. Without really looking too closely at the difference between the two menus we decided to get one of each. I still don't understand why the $240 menu was more expensive. Most dishes were nearly identical, but the $240 menu had one less course and there were no "ultra-luxury" items that would normally expect an upcharge like truffles, caviar, foie gras, etc. Without diving into detail on why each dish was disappointing, I'll just say that most dishes seemed poorly balanced - either too salty or too bitter. There was an herbal lemon jelly that several of the dishes used that completely overpowered the dish with a sour, bitter flavor that was, bluntly, disgusting. Maybe it's just that I don't like Japanese fine dining, because the restaurant seems to be well-reviewed elsewhere, but I will certainly not be going back for a ~$500 dinner. At least the presentation of the food was pretty.

Tokyo - Sightseeing Highlights

Tokyo was our favorite destination. Everything was surprisingly easy to navigate once we figured out that there are actually several distinct rail companies that share some of the same stations. At each of the rail stations we used, there was always staff that spoke English well enough to help us, and we were always made to feel welcome to the country. Every time we asked for help we were politely greeted and treated respectfully. Overall, it seems like Japan strongly encourages foreigners by having multi-language maps, easy to decipher pictures, and multi-lingual customer service to answer questions. The one really annoying thing that surprised me was the lack of trash cans. There were several times where we wanted to throw something away but instead just tossed it in our backpack because we walked for blocks without seeing a garbage can. The same thing goes for buying snacks in marketplaces - eat it and give your trash to the vendor you bought it from, otherwise be prepared to carry the trash with you all day. Somehow, the city seems pretty clean regardless.
While we were in Tokyo, we saw beautiful gardens and temples, and ate amazing food. Most of our time here was spent browsing for souvenirs around the various shopping districts (such as the famous Shibuya crossing area), falling in love with dogs at "puppy cafes", and playing wacky Japanese arcade games. We also spent half a day at DisneySea because my Wife is a Disney fanatic and she originally wanted to do DisneyWorld for our honeymoon.

Kyoto - Hyatt Regency

Compared to the Ritz Carlton, there's not really much to say about this hotel. Compared to most hotels, this was a very nice hotel. Compared to the Ritz Carlton, it was exceptionally normal. The service was pleasant and the concierge was able to recommend how to make the most of our time in Kyoto. From our second story window, we had absolutely no view - we could only see the wall of the building next door. Instead of a 65" top-of-the-line Sony Bravia, we instead had to watch Game of Thrones on a plebeian 42" display. We did not get gourmet chocolates left for us in our room, nor were any thoughtful handwritten notes left by the housekeeper. I know it's not fair to compare this Hyatt to the Ritz Carlton, so to be fair, this hotel was very nice. It was clean, comfortable, and conveniently located. Although I wouldn't recommend it at its cash price of ~$564/nt, I was happy to pay 20k Hyatt points to stay there.

Kyoto/Osaka - Sightseeing Highlights

We purchased the 7-day JR RailPass since I knew we'd use it for a round-trip to Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka and a trip from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport. At ~$260 each, it more than paid for itself. You need to purchase the JR RailPass voucher while you're still in the United States, then bring the voucher with you to Japan. Exchanging the voucher at Tokyo Station was straightforward, and we were able to reserve a seat on the Shinkansen "Hikari" to Kyoto. After just under 3 hours, we arrived at Kyoto Station and took a complimentary taxi to our hotel.
Again, we saw some beautiful temples and ate lots of food. We took a day trip to Osaka using our JR RailPass. We decided not to get reserved seats and just hopped on the next available train, but unfortunately had to stand for the entire 45 minute journey. Osaka was an awesome city and probably deserved more than just a day trip. My wife loved the shopping areas there, and we also took a trip to Osaka Temple at night. While we were there they had an event going on called "Sakuya Lumina" where you stroll along the path to the temple and follow along with a short story of a girl from the future who's trying to get home. Along the way there are beautiful light shows and short movies, and a great photo spot where one of the employees offers to take photos with your phone. At the top, you get a great view of Osaka Temple close-up, where we also found some adorable and friendly stray cats.
Back in Kyoto, we had our most enjoyable day of the vacation. We took the subway to Arashiyama - most well known for its beautiful bamboo forest, temples, and most of all - the Iwatayama monkey park. It's a small hike and about $10 to get to the monkey park, but it's well worth it. When you reach the summit, there are dozens of Macaque monkeys just running around. There are a lot of employees around to stop tourists from touching the monkeys, but you can get pretty much as close as you want. The monkeys here are completely desensitized to humans are will walk right past you, even with their babies. There is a small hut with a fence for a wall where you can feed the monkeys potatoes and peanuts for $1/bag. We happened to be there during "feeding time" where one of the employees walks around and throws chestnuts and seeds on the ground which the monkeys go crazy for. I don't think there's anywhere else in the world where you can experience this, and it's a must-do during a visit to Kyoto.
While we were in Kyoto, we decided we had to try "real" Kobe Wagyu beef. I've had A5 wagyu once before at Cut in Beverly Hills, but I was excited to compare it to what Japan has to offer. And since my steak-loving wife has never tried it, I was especially excited to see her reaction to biting into the best steak shes ever had. The restaurant we chose, Premium Pound Gion, absolutely killed it. Each course was excellent, the ambiance was great (the whole restaurant is just a "chef's table" style seating), and steak was just as good as I remembered. If you've never had Kobe beef (note: the term "Kobe beef" has no significance in the USA, but "A5 wagyu" does; if you want to experience this type of steak in the USA, look for that designator) and aren't a vegetarian, you need to try it. It's worth it. Here are some pictures of the dinner.

Flight - Tokyo to Seoul

After taking the Shinkansen back to Tokyo and going back to the Ritz Carlton to pick some luggage we left there while we were in Kyoto, we spent the remainder of the day at DisneySea Tokyo then headed to our hotel airport to prepare for a 10:30am flight. The Hilton hotel we stayed at did have a very good breakfast buffet that included both Japanese and Western cuisine. For us it was complimentary thanks to the automatic HHonors Gold status provided by the Amex Hilton Ascend. The Korean Air lounge at NRT was pretty unremarkable - similar to the Virgin Atlantic lounge we used at IAD. They did have an area sectioned off for first-class only, which was pretty unnecessary since there was plenty of seating elsewhere. However, it was nice to be able to walk past the "first-class only" sign to let all the other lounge members know just how baller we are.
Just like the ICN-NRT flight, we were served a nice lunch followed be cheese and fruit. The same aircraft, A330-300, was used as well.

Seoul - Hilton Millennium

Unfortunately, with the exception of the Marriott Courtyard we stayed at in Dulles, this was the most disappointing stay of the trip. There wasn't anything awful about it, but this hotel just didn't have the same level of service as the others. When we arrived to the hotel, the doorman unloaded our bags for us but did not take them to our room. The concierge spoke English, but not very well. There was a doorman who assisted with taxis, but several times there were communication problems due to translation. Overall, the hotel staff seemed a little indifferent. In comparison to all the hotels I've ever stayed at, this probably still ranks in the top 50%, but is in a completely different category than the other hotels we stayed at for this trip. On the plus side, they give out free $10 vouchers per person per day to the casino attached to the hotel, which we were always sure to cash out before we left for the day. We also got free breakfast and "cocktail hour" snacks which were always mediocre. We had breakfast most days because it was provided for free, but I would not suggest paying for it if you're not an HHonors Gold member.

Seoul - Sightseeing Highlights

While we were in Seoul, we took a cab pretty much everywhere that wasn't within walking distance. The prices were cabs in Seoul are cheaper than any other city I've taken cabs (DC, NYC, Tokyo, Kyoto), and are barely more expensive than taking the metro. Most fares were less than $10, the most expensive being a ~22 minute cab to Gangnam costing about $13.
Again, we love to try exotic food, so we made sure to experience as much of the local cuisine and street food that we could try. The highlights were the freshly fried sweet "Korean pancake" filled with honey and walnuts and the muskmelon bingsu with ice cream that was surprisingly delicious considering how pretty it looked. We also had Korean BBQ from a restaurant called "The Marbling" that we went to twice because we enjoyed it so much. We really enjoyed walking through the markets and buying junky souvenirs. We also took a guided tour that I would not recommend since it ended with a trip to a "ginseng museum" where they locked us in a sales room for 30 minutes where we were relentlessly pitched to by salespeople to get us to buy hundreds of dollars worth of "cancer-preventing, life-lengthening, energizing ginseng".

Flight - Seoul to Dulles

The check-in for KAL first class flyers is pretty unique at ICN. There's a "first class check-in lounge" prior to security where you're served beverages while your bags are checked. I thought this was a nice touch compared to the normal check-in experience, even though we only stayed for a few minutes before going through security. From what I understand, there's several different Korean Air lounges at ICN. There's the "normal" KAL lounge that anyone can access, the miler lounge that can only be accessed by million milers, and then there's the first-class only lounge. We spent all of our time in the first class lounge, which was the nicest lounge of the trip. We had an early flight home so they were serving breakfast - an assortment of Korean and Western options as well as ice cream, beer, wine, and a small assortment of hard liquor. They also had table service where you could order eggs or a couple other traditional Korean breakfast options. They also had a massage chair, but I couldn't figure out how to work it because all of the controls were in Korean.
The flight was the same as the original IAD-ICN leg with some slightly different but equally delicious food options. After 14 hours of eating, sleeping, watching Game of Thrones, eating, and sleeping, we were back to real life in Dulles where we had a 3 hour drive home.

Total cost of vacation: $6170

Conclusion

The many hours of accumulating points, learning from /churning and /awardtravel, and planning our itinerary were well worth it. I can't wait to build up our points bank in preparation for our next big redemption. Even though I'm glad we flew first class once, I don't think we'll splurge on it again. Business class seems adequate, even though the seats are a fair bit smaller. At least first class seats had plenty of availability so planning around our schedules and only flying non-peak season was not an issue. The Ritz Carlton Tokyo was amazing and well worth the points, but unfortunately due to Marriott award redemption change this hotel will now cost 85k points instead of 60k. It may still be worth it if you have the points to get the 5th night free. The Hyatt Regency was nice, but definitely not worth the cash rate. The Hilton Millennium was probably not worth the amount of points we blew on it, but Hilton points are pretty worthless anyway. The Conrad in Seoul may have been a better option - it's hard to say, they have similar reviews. If you go to Japan, go to Arashiyama and the Iwatayama Monkey Park! Also, early May turned out to be a great time of the year to travel to Japan/Korea. Every day was in the low 70s and mostly sunny - perfect weather!

My mom thinks it's her day. FH put a moratorium on wedding planning for 6 months. Planning is back on now and I'm losing my sanity again.

Obligatory long time lurker, first time poster. (This is a long one...but I'm wondering if I'm coming out of the FOG?...I didn't think I was even in it in the first place and maybe I'm just projecting.)
I’m going to start this out with what I’m sure is going to cause an audible groan or “Bless her heart” (for those Southern inclined folks reading this)...I never thought that my mom was a JustNo and I still think she’s JustMaybe. (Feel free to correct on the “Just”ness that is my mother.) Since I got engaged to my wonderful DH, she’s been driving me up a wall, inducing panic attacks, and generally making me feel like a shit person/daughter. FH even had to put a moratorium on wedding planning because I was crying at least once a month, if not more. We’ve been engaged for two years now and have one year left before getting married. I don’t know how much longer I can stand how my mother is treating me. Please note that I am still very dependent on my parents and I'm working on becoming independent. I work for my dad and he's paying for my tuition for my Master's degree and pretty much everything else...but I'm not getting an actual paycheck. I just got my first real job (internship) that applies to my degree and future, so I'm making my own money and have something that's reliable!! It's amazing!
Anyways, In order to save for the wedding (at least that's what my parents reasoning was) I moved out of my rental apartment in University town to move 45 min to their vacation home. FH had a chance to live with me for 4 months before/after Army training two years ago. He said he loved living with me, but could not stand my mother invading his/our privacy and got his own apartment for the following school year. I don't blame. I now see the problems. I can't believe it took me seeing her rearrange our kitchen to her liking, using our bathroom instead of the guest bathroom, and reorganizing OUR UNDERWEAR DRAWER to see the problems and boundary stomping. But I digress...wedding planning:
Issue Number 1
Wedding dress shopping was miserable. I decided to go ahead and get it done because my mom wasn’t listening to a single thing I said I wanted. How did the first dress shopping appointment go? She managed to say “Well how would it fit when itsmydamnwedding lost weight after going on her diet plan for the wedding?” no less than 4 times in one hour. It was so bad and so insistent that my BFF actually pulled me aside afterwards and asked if I was okay. As in making sure I wasn’t starving myself because of how much my mom mentioned me dieting to LOSE SO MUCH WEIGHT! I wasn’t even on a diet. Yes I want to get in shape and lose about 30+ lbs, but don’t say that every time I try on a damn dress!! The second infraction at this first appointment…whenever I was trying on a dress and opened the curtain, she’d be gone from the couch and BFF would have to go and find her in the ocean of white wedding dresses. Any happiness I may have had about the dress I had on was gone by the time she got back. After this awful appointment, I told her how much it hurt me and that I needed her to back off on the weight mentions. She said she was trying to look out for me and make sure the dress would look how I wanted it to if I had gotten it and lost weight. Whatever. We still didn’t even have a wedding date at this time!! I also mentioned going to find a few other stores to try on some dresses while my mom was back in West Coast State (I’m in the South, she’s on the West Coast.) SHE FORBADE ME FROM GOING WEDDING DRESS SHOPPING WITHOUT HER! FORBADE ME!!! So I was just supposed to put on hold such a big aspect of me as the bride to wait for whenever she MAY come back and visit???
Hell no.
I found a wonderful bridal boutique that was so friendly and lovely…and I made a secret appointment with them where only BFF would be present. And...I FOUND MY DRESS!!!! BFF cried a little. She took some photos on her phone and said if I wanted to see them that she would send them via book Messenger so that my mom wouldn’t find out. BFF also brought me grapes and wine and cheeses and happiness for this appointment. I was so happy but so nervous at the same time. I told the stylist that I would be coming back in one month with my mom and I asked her to:
  1. Act like she had never met me before.
  2. Hide ALL dresses that were layered, corset, not lace, and over a certain price point.
  3. Do her best to make my dream dress, the one I had already chosen, my mom’s idea.
This stylist was amazing and did everything perfectly. BFF was also at this appointment, as well as my Nana (mom's mom). My mom even "picked out" my dress. BUT there was a trunk show two months later where there would be SO many more dresses to look at. My mom wouldn’t say yes to the dress until the trunk show. (Yes, she and my dad are paying for probably 90% of my wedding. I humored her even though I knew this was my dress.) So she flies back to the West Coast and then two months later flies back to Southern State just for the trunk show. We buy the dress I wanted in the first place, at a discount due to the trunk show I will say, and I’m SO HAPPY!! YAY! Still haven’t gotten it fully ordered yet, but it’s on the list and in my profile at the boutique. As a result we haven’t gotten to the alterations portion yet, which has me quite nervous with what she’s going to say about my weight or tell the seamstress I want something that I don’t actually want.
Issue Number 2
FH and I wanted to get married at X Church and have the reception at Y Location by the lake I would visit every summer growing up. It's 45 min away from our University and my parents own a lakehouse there (which I'm living in). Problem is, the nearest hotel is also 45 min away. But FH also grew up visiting his grandparents on a lake, so we wanted to try and make it work.
Y’all.
My family has been at this lake for 15 years. Suddenly my mom decided that she hated every restaurant, said Y Location was not elderly friendly, complained about how she’d have to look after Nana, and said that X Church was too expensive to rent for the ceremony. FH and I offered to pay for X Church and that we would be okay moving the reception to Z Location. NOPE! NOT GOOD ENOUGH! But what is good enough? A SKYSCRAPER IN BIG CITY THAT OVERLOOKS A MUDDY BROWN RIVER AND A BASEBALL STADIUM!!! FH and I hate cities, wanted our pristine blue lake, and haven’t been to a baseball game…ever (other than when we were dragged to them as kids). So I say no. It’s not us. What’s her next suggestion? A NATIVE AMERICAN CASINO!!! Wtf. Their food at this location isn’t that great, it only has slot machines (cuz no fun in the South with gambling), and WHY?!?! I was having panic attacks about pleasing my mom but also saying “no” and wanting our wedding to represent FH and myself. So…I decided to move the location to 15 min from where FH’s parents live in Other Southern State.
Now my MIL can also be a bit JustNo sometimes, but I’ve only cried twice after arguments with her whereas I cry THINKING about arguments with my mom. I recently told my mom that these “disagreements” we were having with her were why we decided to move the location to another state…”But I wasn’t arguing. I love X Church and Y Location! We could’ve gotten it to work. I was just providing options.” She said this after we had just put down a deposit at a reception location in Other Southern State. Well, no changing now!! (This new location is beautiful btw and we also get to have the ceremony in a Catholic Church which is something I’ve always wanted.) But yeah…not her fault we moved locations.
Issue Number 3
There’s a villa on site that’s right next to the reception venue. You can rent it out per room at pretty reasonable prices. My parents will be renting it the Friday before the wedding for my bridal party, mom, Nana, and myself. FH and I would like it for Saturday night so we don’t have to travel far after the reception and could even have a few friends over after the reception for an “after party” and play drunk Mario Cart or MonkeyBall. (It’s wonderful and so much fun.) When I mentioned this to my mom she said indignantly, “So you’re just going to kick me and Nana out of the villa?!” Uhhhhh…well when you phrase it like that. “Yeah that’s not gonna happen.” And then she says how she hates that my dad wants her to stay at the villa as opposed to the hotel where all of her friends are going to be…then go stay at the hotel??? When I told FH this his response was, "Soooo she's going to kick out the bride instead?" I told FH to just go ahead and plan for us to go a swanky ass hotel for the time being that we won’t be telling anyone where it will be.
Issue Number 4 (Holy cow this just keeps going.)
This happened this morning and I see it happening again in the future. FH and I found a baker that we love. I emailed Baker asking about a 4 tier wedding cake for 125-150 people. My mom made a face when I mentioned 4 tiers and said “Won’t that be too much?? You don’t need all that!” Then says how she wants to be able to take the left over cake home…If we have 150 people and a cake that serves 100 people, how much cake does she think will be left over? And do FH and I not get to take any home with us (something we can eat that’s not the anniversary topper)? Is that weird? What about leftover food from the reception? All other weddings I’ve been at the staff normally packs up a hefty amount of the leftovers for the bride and groom to take back home/to their hotel…but my mom wants it.
What really hurt though is that she made it seem like our opinion was so utterly insignificant that we didn’t even need to be present for the food tastings. I just made an appointment with Baker for the first week of August to go taste cakes. My mom leaves to go back to West Coast on the 31st, so she will not be here for the tasting. I read my email out loud that I was sending to Baker this morning at 5am because I wanted to make sure it sounded like the English language (I was pre-coffee).
When I uttered the words for the tasting date, my mom interjects with “But I’m not going to be here.”
Me: Right…but this is the first day FH and I both have available. And we want to book Baker as fast as we can (haha unintentional patty cake reference?) so we don’t lose him like we already lost the photographer I wanted.
Mom: I just thought it would be fun for me to be there.
Me: It would be great to have you and dad there, but this is the best time for us to schedule it. And I would like FMIL and FFIL to be able to get some cake to taste too…you know, include them in something, so I was going to get some to-go taster boxes to bring to them and get for y’all when you’re back here.
Mom: Fine.
Me: For the sake of communication, what’s wrong? Because "fine" tells me nothing.
Mom: Well if you want to go with FFIL and FMIL instead of me (notice no mention of my dad???) it's whatever.
Me: Ffs mom. I never said I wanted to take them over you. I said I would get them a taster box. It will just be FH and I at the bakery. I want to kind of make a decision with the man I’m going to marry on what our cake will taste like.
Mom: …
Me: It’s 5:30am and I have to get to work.
Mom: I just think the baker would like to actually meet who’s going to be paying for the cake and make sure that they like the choices that were made.
Me: hold the fuck up Wow. Okay. Yeah. Maybe when he’s got our choices and has a second tasting with what everything will be like, we can have you and dad there. But it’s so far out right now and I just want to make sure he’ll be our baker for the day of.
I called FH (whom I woke up…oops) and fumed to him the guilt trip my mom just tried to lay on me. Told him what she said about the people buying the cake should taste it and he responded with “Fine. I’ll get the fucking cake. And she’ll get to taste it when every other guest gets a chance…and I’m getting my damn strawberries on top no matter what’s said.”
So. That' my wedding planning so far. We have until October of next year until FH and I are DH and I. I'm applying for a job a week it feels like and getting nothing back. My dad can be JustNo occasionally as well, so he's not much help here. I don't know what else to do to maintain my sanity or to develop my spine more. It's so hard when she can just come visit me now whenever she wants and I can't get away. But hey...at least I'll get to eat delicious cake in a couple of weeks!! I'm not sure what kind of advice I'm really looking for, but I'm hoping someone will have something that I can do to help put up boundaries...or even tell me that I'm in the wrong if it's the truth .

5/12/18 Downtown Detroit Wedding RECAP and Budget Breakdown (135 guests/$60k)

First: PHOTOS!
We got engaged Dec 31, 2016 and decided to get married in the Detroit area (spouse's hometown) even though we both live in Atlanta. My family would have to travel either way and we wanted to make it easier on his friends and family who we predicted would be less likely to travel.
My initial budget thought was 25-30k (he said later he assumed way more) but after looking at 5 venues in 7 hours on a weekend visit we absolutely fell in love with our expensive-as-hell venue and upped it quite a bit. My main thing was to get married on the water, have amazing food and make it as nice foeasy on our guests as possible which our venue made perfectly possible. It was also mostly-inclusive which I knew would help us with planning from afar as I work a lot and didn't want to have to track down every vendor myself.
We paid for our wedding/welcome party/honeymoon completely on our own-- we are mid-30s established professionals with one living parent between us and I already own our home, etc. I know our budget is on the higher side around here but I know I appreciated any kind of recap when I was planning so I am trying to breakdown everything I can.
Guest count: 212 invited including children and plus ones, 135 attended including 5 babies/kids. This was almost exactly the number we were planning on due to the number of people residing out of state. We had 5 people RSVP then back out last minute (one had a baby so totally excusable, the others were just jerks) but a couple of other local friends of friends filled in (we thought why not--we had already paid for it)
Venue, etc: ~$40,0000 –Waterview Loft at Port Detroit. This included ceremony with officiant, full open bar, passed apps, dinner (salad, duet of filet mignon and chicken with potato and veggies or vegetarian entree), pastries, late night snack, tables, chairs, linens, service staff, venue coordinator, pretty much everything not listed below. This also includes DJ, Cake, valet parking, and florals/design/rentals company who all contract through the venue and a few upgrades with them are included in that total as are the tips that we gave to the bartenders/valet/day of coordinator.
Cake: Sweet Heather Anne: Main cake was included above but I did spend around $100 for a smaller gluten-free chocolate cake from a separate bakery
Photographers $3200: Rosy and Shaun Wedding Photography: Husband and wife team for 8 hours of coverage and photo booth. They were amazing. We weren't super into being pulled away for a bunch of photos and did all of our posed shots prior to ceremony and they still captured some incredible images and great candid shots during the event.
HaiMakeup: $1250-- Detroit Glam: 2 Hair and makeup stylists on location at hotel for me, 5 bridesmaids and mother in law with airbrush and eyelashes included. I covered everyone and this includes tips.
Hotel rooms: $800, Two suites two nights each at the Marriott hotel next to the venue where we also had a guest block. We stayed in one suite where the groomsmen then got ready and we booked a hospitality suite with a murphy bed for me/bridesmaids to get ready. One of my bridesmaids stayed in this suite as I wanted to cover her room anyway.
Attire:$1250-- I made/sewed my own dress so approximately $800 in fabric total (silks from Mood) and maybe another $100 in notions/resources most of which are reusable. I also spent 100+ hours on it (not including muslins/toiles) over a year's time but I really wanted to use the crochet fabric from my deceased mother's dress and I am really tall and hard to fit anyway. It was truly a labor of love and though I'm not sure I'd do it again the same way I learned a TON and I ended up really loving it even if the fit wasn't as great as it would have been with professional help.
The veil was my also my mom’s my uncle bought in Europe for her wedding in the 70s-- I sewed it onto a comb. I also wore a brooch that has been worn by all the women in my family since my great-great grandmother. I found the Manolos for less than $200 at a Saks outlet but changed into ballet flats ($50) later. My earrings were from the Saks outlet and I found a bracelet to match on Etsy (<200 combined). His tux rental with shoes from Men's Warehouse was free as we had all the groomsmen get theirs there.
Rings: $500. This includes my simple gold wedding band from a local jeweler and his inexpensive titanium ring from Amazon. My engagement ring was my grandmother's wedding ring that I inherited long before engaged and that I gave to him when I was ready for him to ask me :)
Welcome Party: $6,900, Mexican-themed buffet and open bar for 75 guests at upscale brewpub next to our hotel. We invited the whole guest list but it was mostly bridal party and out of town guests staying at the hotel. I was a bit shocked when I got the final price estimate as I am fully aware that this is the cost of a lot of weddings but it was one of my favorite parts of the weekend and we really got to spend time with people who had traveled to be with us.
Day of Food: ~$500 Brunch/coffee catered by the hotel and mimosas for the ladies while we got ready, pizza and beer for the dudes. I may have pre-ordered the pizza while tipsy after the welcome party and way overestimated how much they would eat. It was good leftovers at 4 am after the casino though.
Stationary and postage: $500, super simple save the dates from Vista Print then single page invitations with a detail card with gold foil and 20 RSVP cards for older folks from Shutterfly. Waited for sales on both. We used appycouple for our website and online RSVP and I would probably choose another site/app if I were doing it again.
Favors: $500 we did Uno card decks because Uno is our favorite. I ordered them online on black friday and printed the stickers from Zazzle then assembled on Christmas while we were up there
Welcome bags: <200. Nothing fancy just water, soda, snacks from Costco, a map and transit tokens. Mostly did them because we were in a huge hotel and I wanted to make sure people had something to eat/drink around without having to do room service.
Gifts: We got random personal gifts for everyone in our wedding party (from records to curtains) and I honestly have no idea what the total was as I ordered mine and he ordered his. They were all big hits though. We also gave a restaurant gift card to MIL's friend who helped spray paint the records and a gift card to a younger cousin who recorded the ceremony/helped MIL get around all weekend.
Other assorted stuff I bought (really tried to limit this): ~$300 total--simple glass card box from amazon, pac man cake topper from etsy, photos and frames for memory table, frames for table numbers (which were my mom's watercolors I scanned and printed), flipflops for guests ($1 during an old navy sale last summer and a HUGE hit), spray paint for records we used as chargers and the menu stickers for them (records themselves were promos gifted by a friend who owns a store), cardboard cutouts of our dogs for the photo booth, marriage license. Our friend gifted us the constellation poster and it made a great "guest book."
Prenup: $2000 legal fees-- I suppose I should include this. We are odd and talked about prenups on our second date when neither of us had much of anything but now we both have more assets and I own a business so it was pretty much a given for us. Went very smoothly just each had to hire our own attorney.
Honeymoon: $3500-- We came home for three nights to see our dogs, catch up on work and repack. We then had 2 nights in Miami and rented a car and drove to Key West for 2 nights. We sprung for really nice rooms since we were staying in the country so that as well as flights is most of the cost here.
Total: $62,000 (ish)
What went wrong
• Planning a wedding when your parents are dead just sucks. I lost my dad at 18 and my mom three years ago both to cancer. Husband lost his dad when he was 19. I was really worried about how my emotions would be the day of because I had some real low points about it while planning but I tried to include a lot of personal touches that would make me feel like my mom was around and for the most part it worked. I also carved out time in the morning for being alone to think about them, cry and thank them and that helped keep the tears from coming later I think.
• Weather-- It was colder than we had hoped all weekend (approx. 45-55F though the weekend before and after were 70+) and it rained all morning/afternoon of the wedding which kept us from doing our first look outside and also our ceremony outside which was something I really really wanted. It did clear up about an hour before the wedding so we were able to do some photos outside and our guests could enjoy being on the patio/river during the reception.
• I wish I slept more the night before because I look tired and my eyes are half closed in almost all of our photos. I didn't stay up all night partying but I did stay up later than planned and couldn't sleep past 6 am.
• Lastly we started late because I really wanted to greet guests with champagne as they came in but between people then not moving into the ceremony on time and people having traffic issues we were 30+ minutes late starting the ceremony which threw us off all night and we only ended up with about an hour and a half for cake and dancing after dinner. I loved everything that we did but probably would have tried to book an extra hour to party until midnight.
What went right:
• Everything else. Everything I had worked toward for over a year came out perfectly and we felt so much joy and love all around us. Every bit of stress and money was absolutely worth it to have all our people in one place for a weekend. The venue, food and staff were absolutely amazing and we got tons of compliments on all of it.
• I loved all the "different" things that we did like greeting our guests at the door and having our speeches/toasts during cocktail hour. Though it did throw off our timeline, I thought it made for a nice flow and gave us more time to visit with guests.
• My bridesmaid's 10 month old started walking early so we decided to send him down the aisle as a "ring bearer" even though we weren't planning to have one. He did great and it was adorable.
• We took ~15 minutes of alone time after the ceremony/signing the marriage license and walked down the river just us, no photographers. This was one of my favorite parts and definitely recommend!
• My uncle (mom's brother) made a toast unexpectedly that made everyone cry and was really welcoming of my husband to the family--definitely one of my favorite moments
• Since we got married in Detroit there are several casinos and for a while I had been thinking I wanted to go play blackjack in my wedding dress after the reception. Well, a ton of our friends went to the casino as an afterparty and I won $350 my first time playing at a table!
I said this before but you guys provided so much help, wisdom, and inspiration so thank you again for your part in making our wedding so wonderful!

[Sell][US] QUITE POSSIBLY THE LARGEST SALE POST IN AWHILE! COLOURPOP, DOC, NYX, GERARD COSMETICS, WET N WILD, KAT VON DE, SONIA KASHUK! LOADS OF LIPS! PRESSED SHADOW PANS ALCHEMIST PALETTE AND SO MUCH MORE! WICKED DEALS :D

Hello Everyone!
Hope everyone is having a makeup-tastic day over here at MUE! :)
Here is Part One of my MEGA SWEET DEALS SALE!! There is mostly lip stuff and a few other things that I had typed and ready to go. Let me help you score so killer deals on mostly BN items!
This post will be any lipstick queen’s dream as I have everything from Colourpop to Gerad Cosmetics, Nyx to Lipland. A LOT of stuff to come in and take a peek at!
So the Nitty Gritty Details first as always:
Sale Set Up
Going to go by timestamps for dibs, and will use the typical NIL system that most sales use. Please don’t ghost me, I really do not mind if you change your mind. And if you cannot commit to an item within 2 hours I will move to the next person- unless we have arrangements made via PM holding time wise. I am pretty flexible to a point, no lowballs, but a lot of the prices are a decent percent off retail already, so I may be firmer on some things price wise. REALLY THOUGH TRY ME YOU MAY BE SURPRISED :)
Shipping Starts at $3 and goes up by weight- depending how heavy or how much you buy we can probably come up with a bundle price for you. And I will try and get the shipping as cheap as possible- even if I have to send stuff separately or get creative lol.
Going to be shipping within the USA, but I have done a few Canada sales, and one to the Netherlands- so if you are International and really don’t mind the $$$ shipping let me know we can work something out. You would be responsible for any and all customs issues that arrive if they were to occur- so you are agreeing to that as well when you purchase internationally from me. Can also insure the package on request- you cover that too.
Payment
I take payments through Paypall only please. I prefer Friends and Family Payments, but if you would like Goods and Services Protection, then you would just cover the fees. If it is a lot of stuff you are buying and would like G&S I prefer to send you an invoice, you still cover fees. Please pay promptly so I can package up and get your goodies to you as fast as I can (unless we have agreed to other arrangements in PMs such as holding times and such)
Sanitization
I would more than likely mess it up completely so that will be 100% up to the purchaser.
Who is this chick anyway??
I have had two posts on MUE, but I have done at least 100 requests and or sales fulfilled, and have a good set of feedback on Ebay- if you would like to see qualifications let me know :) And if anyone who has bought from me wants to give me a shout out in the comments that would be cool proof too! Lol (I have quite a few regulars hehe) I really enjoy this great community, I haven’t had any problems with anyone and would love to have some new customers to meet more of you :)
Mods: Verification is tagged in sets of items- like I will tag the first thing out of a list of what the photo contains. Let me know if there are any no no’s in my post and I will fix it promptly.

[Sell][US] NEW STUFF ADDED! HUGE SALE COLOURPOP, DOC, NYX, GERARD COSMETICS, WET N WILD, KAT VON D, MILK, ALGENIST, TOO FACED SONIA KASHUK! LOADS OF LIPS! TONS OF ASIAN BEAUTY MAKEUP! WICKED DEALS, FEEL FREE TO MAKE OFFERS! SMALL ISO INSIDE

Hello Everyone!
So the Nitty Gritty Details first as always:
Sale Set Up
Going to go by timestamps for dibs, and will use the typical NIL system that most sales use. Please don’t ghost me, I really do not mind if you change your mind. And if you cannot commit to an item within 2 hours I will move to the next person- unless we have arrangements made via PM holding time wise.Don’t like my prices? Make me an offer, I am pretty flexible to a point, no lowballs, but a lot of the prices are a decent percent off retail already, so I may be firmer on some things price wise. REALLY THOUGH TRY ME YOU MAY BE SURPRISED :) Also it’s a lot of stuff to keep track of, so I apologize if it hasn’t been removed from the list right away if it’s been sold!
Payment
I take payments through Paypal only please.
Mods: Verification is tagged in sets of items- like I will tag the first thing out of a list of what the photo contains. Let me know if there are any no no’s in my post and I will fix it promptly.
